Google WIFI review
I am starting with the closing sentence... "Google WIFI... for me the best 2017 product..."
but.. hey let's start from the beginning...
I assume most of you aware of many products that provides WIFI range extender, they usually called WIFI repeaters , WIFI Amplifiers, WIFI Extender, and probably many other terminologies to provide better WIFI coverage.
The story started long time ago, I have moved to a bigger house , with two floors, i had Router + Wifi built-in from my ISP, it work fine as long as you are closed to the device.
but... many parts of my house was out of range, hence it cause me to look for other solution.
and then i bought Netgear repeater, and it did extend the network, but i faced slow network and many disconnections, another issue was that my Iphone for example was connected to the main device, and it moved to the extender after disconnected from the main device... and believe me it was frustrating.
looking to solve the other missing signal parts in my house, i have added more and more repeaters, but the problems persist, my ISP line was 100/3 Mbit , but on my WIFI network it was maximum of 15Mbit.
One day i have heard about Google WIFI ,which is uses the MESH technology, since i am networking veteran i was aware of this technology for long time but not for home use.
I decided to check the technology and all the players on this field and i find the google as the most effective in terms of Cost, technology and design.
let's go over the technology.
Mesh technology used to create single WIFI Network , and no matter if you move between "points" you will stay on the network and you will not loose the signal nor performance.
in terms of performance, when you first plug-in it , it takes no more than 7 minutes to configure (just next , next... using the google wifi App)
using SpeedTest i check the performance, first time i was shocked , i got 83Mbit download rate, i can't explain it, but it was more than i am getting when i plug my PC directly to the ISP Router.
the box contains 3 "point" with USB Type-C for power (great and comfortable)
It came as one point or multiple (i am using 3 points), you can anytime add additional "point" to extend the range of your network.
TIP: when you buy 3 points it will be much more cost effective.
The Good:
Beautiful design, let your CEO(Wife) choose the best location to place it - it is just beautiful device.
Price: 269$ for 3 Points, the price is reasonable if you compare it to the other vendor listed later.
Performance: Great performance 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, .
Ongoing support: Automatic updates from the cloud , no need to download manually firmware and all the old stuff you familiar with.
Great App:
allows you to define guest network, add more points, prioritize devices, get statistics on your network or specific connected device. manage your network remotely from any location (based on your google account) , shutdown the network when you decided that it "NO Internet time" and many more stuff.
The Bad:
Performance degraded by 30% when moving to the 2nd point, but i can leave with that.
Cost: i expect to get this technology with lower cost, but still affordable.
